Video Rountable – Storing Fat, Barefoot Running, Ab Workouts, Big Lies, Suspension Trainer

Here’s some quick links to some interesting videos on different topic including a basic one for how fat is stored/burned, a good visual on the difference between running “barefoot” and with running shoes, a simple ab workout (and shoulder routine at the end), big lies in nutrition and a homemade suspension trainer. Enjoy!

How Fat is Stored

Thanks to Marks Daily Apple for pointing this one out (video from the movie Fat Head)

Barefoot vs Shoe Running Video

Thanks to Physical Living for pointing this one out.

The “Commercial Break” Ab Workout

I call this the “commercial break” because you can do it while you are watching TV and during commercials! No excuses!!

Video from Steve Maxwell.

The Big Fat Lies

Here’s a short video that shows how we got to the whole “fat is evil” belief in the first place. Also take note in the beginning how it talks about how short we have had grains (and vegetable oils) in our evolutionary timeframe. Try and ditch the grains as much as possible, you will be better off if you do it.

Thanks to Zen to Fitness for pointing this out (which is also from the same movie Fat Head from the 1st clip above)

Homemade Suspension Trainer

For those who are handy (and can tie sturdy knots), here is a way to make your own suspension trainer to use. If you are not that handy, we do recommend the Jungle Gym from Lifeline as the most inexpensive+sturdy product out there.

and Ross shows us how to put them to use (heavy metal music free of charge)

Thanks to Ross Training for showing this (and FS reader Kujo for pointing it out to us in the comments)

@Chris – I think 2010 is the year of more interactive blogging, as text can be long and tedious to go through, especially if one subscribes to many blogs out there. I need to get myself a HD camera and start figuring out how to record workout stuff as well. Should be a fun year!

    Great vids — thanks!

one quibble on the “big fat lies” video: The lines connecting the country dots in the graphs of heart attacks vs. fat consumption aren’t “trend lines.” They’re just lines connecting dots. And, no (adult) scientist would present graphs like these.

Assuming the relationship between heart attacks and fat consumption is linear, the best-fitting model fit to the trimmed data (i.e., without Norway, Holland, and Chile) would be a straight line with an upward slope. Adding in all 22 countries would yield a straight line with a flat slope. In neither case would the line necessarily bisect *any* of the country data points, because the best-fitting line is simply the line that minimizes the sum of the squared distances between the data points and the line.

I’m not saying the makers of the video are wrong in pointing out that if you trim countries from your data set, you’ can get biased results. But, if you’re going to attack someone’s science, you shouldn’t commit a rookie scientist error like calling something a trend line when it isn’t.

Vegas Pro Straps (google it if interested) are better than Jungle Gym in terms of quality /price patio. Their least expensive system is $38.95 vs. $49.95 Jungle Gym and it’s of a better quality (I have both). So if you opt for buying as opposed to DIY I would recommend VPS. No association with them whatsoever.
