Guys, one issue I see mentioned in your blog that was not touched upon is the source of the red palm oil. It is true that there have been some massive development of palm plantations in Indonesia, Malaysia, and some of this in South America. They have seriously destroyed the environment by burning the debris on the land thereby displacing and killing orangutans and many species of wildlife. This has even affected local citizens that have been subjected to intimidation for the good of the large companies and local government. If you look at the history of palm oil, it originates from West Africa and the seedling were sent to Southeast Asia and South America some 40-90 years ago.

I am very much a red palm oil consumer and have been doing so for many years. In my research I found that the best red palm oil are the ones from West Africa. The important fact to know is that red palm oil from West Africa is derived from sustainable agriculture (so it is coming from traditional farms not plantations) and it is normally Fair Trade. I personally buy my red palm oil online from www.rainforestredpalmoil.com

The rainforest red palm oil is certified organic, derived sustainable agriculture and Fair Trade. There is no other red palm oil like this in America. I have suggested to them to try to market wholesale to local supermarket and organic foodstores. For now I will take it anyway I can get it!

Good catch Rob. This post was written before I was aware that there are naturally-occurring trans fats in beef. In this digest on 4/14, I pointed to an article showing that the natural trans fats are beneficial against heart disease and other illnesses. It's another case where the results aren't as black-and-white as they seem. Though the advice to avoid trans fats is still good advice because the proportion of naturally-occurring trans fats is so minimal compared to the man-made ones, and the good ones can't be avoided if eating beef as one should be doing anyway. Hope that makes sense.

Cheers

Great article Scott, however, it seems that trans fats can not be collectively interpreted as harmful, as several studies on conjugated linoleic acid may suggest its benefits. You're probably aware of this also, but just thought I might point it out.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Judy,
You are correct that there are quite a few environmental problems with the production of palm oil. At the time I wrote this article, I was unaware of them. However, it doesn't change the fact that palm oil is one of the most healthful oils available. I've switched most of my oil usage to coconut oil and beef tallow and am in the process of sourcing leaf lard.

Good luck with your project and keep us updated.

Cheers

Hi
This article is excellent and a great help to me in an article I am writing about cholesterol not being the cause of heart disease. My one problem with it is the negative environmental impact of palm oil plantations particularly in Indonesia where indigenous people have been displaced and many animals are losing their habitats. This includes the orang-utan, which is now in real danger. How do you answer this.
